The healthworkforce.eu platform serves as the European knowledge hub for a series of initiatives dedicated to strengthening health workforce planning and forecasting across Europe. It builds on the achievements of the Joint Action on European Health Workforce Planning and Forecasting (2013–2016) and the SEPEN (Support for the Health Workforce Planning and Forecasting Expert Network) initiative, preserving their tools, guidance, and knowledge while extending their impact through the current HEROES Joint Action – HEalth woRkfOrce to meet health challEngeS (2023-2026). Together, these initiatives contribute to a long-term European strategy for addressing health workforce shortages, improving workforce intelligence, strengthening planning governance, and supporting resilient health systems capable of responding to future demographic, epidemiological, and technological challenges.

The latest flagship initiative behind the platform is the HEROES Joint Action, a collaboration of 19 European countries and 51 partner organisations co-funded under the EU4Health Programme. HEROES aims to strengthen national capacities in health workforce planning by improving workforce data systems, forecasting methodologies, planning skills, and stakeholder engagement to support accessible, sustainable, and resilient health systems.
